CAPÃTULO 1
A Ãndia Moatira está banhando seu filho quando os brancos avançam na direção da aldeia: Bento Coutinho, Dom Braz, Afonso e Isabel, a única mulher da Bandeira, entre outros. O namorado de Moatira é morto com um tiro e a maioria dos Ãndios é morta também. Beatriz, prima e noiva de Tiago Olinto, desembarca em Santos, na mesma caravela que traz Ana, Antônia e Padre Miguel. Tiago, filho de Dom Braz, afirma ter encontrado ouro próximo à aldeia. No porto de Santos, Aimbê e Tuiu aguardam Beatriz para levá-la à casa de Dom Braz. As roupas espalhafatosas de Antônia e sua grande beleza chamam atenção e Mestre Davidão se insinua para ela. Encarregado por Dom Jerônimo de cuidar de sua noiva, Guilherme procura Ana: os dois sentem-se atraÃdos um pelo outro, mas Ana sempre foge, pois deve casar-se com Dom Jerônimo para libertar seu pai da inquisição. Beatriz parte para Lagoa Serena com Aimbê e Tuiu e fica encantada com as belezas da floresta brasileira. Um dos mestiços de Bento tenta violentar Moatira, mas Tiago impede-o, os dois brigam e Tiago acaba matando-o. Furioso com a perda de seu mestiço, Bento briga com Tiago, mas os dois são separados por Dom Braz. Tuiu irrita Aimbê encantando os pássaros, que o bate e faz com que derrube uma das duas arcas de Beatriz. Como nenhum deles tem coragem de descer para pegá-la, ela desce até um platô do precipÃcio e despenca no abismo.
