Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) is een zeer gecompliceerd mens. Hij is het soort persoon met wie niemand in de lift zou

zijn om vreselijk bespot te worden. Op een dag komt Simon in het ziekenhuis terecht. Melvin wordt gevraagd om voor
Simon's hondje Verdell, een gecompliceerd mormel met gebruiksaanwijzingen. Dit brengt een verrassende wending in de
levens van de drie totaal van elkaar verschillende New Yorkers, die in feite allen op zoek zijn naar het echte
