The Arnold
Schoenerg Edition is a similar attempt to collect one recording of every piece by the composer into one place.  Like the
Shostakovich Edition, the order is based off of a complete scores collection, but the two composers' outputs vary
drastically.  While Shostakovich preferred to almost never revise pieces once they were finished, most of Schoenberg's
output consists of him reworking his or others' pieces.  For instance, there are no less than five separate versions of
the Chamber Symphony No. 1, and four of the 34 volumes of scores are devoted to orchestrations Schoenberg may or may not
have actually been responsible for.  As such, the recorded edition reflects this preponderance of different versions,
fragments, and transcriptions.  CD 13 is solely devoted to arrangements of the Chamber
Symphony and F?nf Orchesterst?cke, while the final four CDs are commonly attributed
transcriptions (although even these are not complete based on the scores).  Even with this
"fluff", the Edition only lasts through 31 CDs.  Also problematic are Schoenberg's opus numbers, which feel
like they weren't used for a good half of his works.  As the Complete Works collection follows this pattern, I continued
with putting works with opus numbers first chronologically, and those without afterwards.

The first three CDs
consist of songs, which surprisingly do not include separate versions for piano and orchestral.  Glenn Gould's
recordings with various vocalists make up the songs proper, while the rest of the second CD is filled out by the Lange
Volkslieder and the Levine-Norman Brettl-Lieder (don't ask me why about that).  CD 3's orchestral lieder are represented
by the Craft and Boulez versions, while more Lange early piano songs finish off the set.

The next two CDs are
enough to hold just about all of Schoenberg's music for keyboard.  His proper piano composition are short enough that
the first CD has room for organ music as well.  Paul Jacobs gets the nod on piano (although there are many recordings of
this short set), while Kevin Bowyer is tapped on organ.  The second CD consists of his works for two pianos or four
hands (two chamber symphony arrangements and six short early pieces), and piano fragments found in Series B of the
Complete Works.  The main artists here are the Kratzers and Pi-Hsien Chen.

CDs 6-9 are the stage works, which
are just three one-act operas and the mostly finished Moses und Aron.  In order not to chop pieces up, the various acts
are kept on separate CDs, and so none of the four CDs are longer than 55 minutes.  It didn't end up making sense to add
other pieces onto these CDs, but such is Schoenberg's output.  Conductors in order are Dohnanyi, Boulez, Gielen, and
Solti.

CDs 10-15 house the works for full or string orchestra.  The first three CDs are the proper works,
with the concertos being separated onto a shorter CD since nothing else would fit.  Again reflecting the Complete Works,
the final three CDs are mostly arrangements of other works.  This includes two versions of Verkl?rte Nacht for string
orchestra, along with the arrangements of the String Quartet No. 2 and Ode To Napoleon (out of necessity sequenced
before their original versions appear).

CDs 16-20 are the choral works, which include a couple of larger
pieces for orchestra.  Gurrelieder and Die Jakobsleiter are important pieces that Schoenberg neglected to give opus
numbers to, and like the stage works they are kept on shorter CDs to preserve continuity.  The last two CDs are the
works for a capella choir or shorter pieces with orchestra.

CDs 21-27 consist of various chamber pieces, and
is where most of Schoenberg's popular works are located.  The main four string quartets take up the first two CDs, and I
selected the well-regarded Lasalle Quartet readings.  Also found on the first CD are two string quartet fragments.  CD
23 contains the other string chamber works that didn't fit on the first two CDs.  For Verkl?rte Nacht and the String
Trio, I preferred the recording from the Santa Fe Chamber Festival of 1982.  Unfortunately, this recording has not yet
made it onto CD (although it was released on cassette and LP).  This means these two pieces are LP rips, as no digital
source is as yet available.  The quality of the rip isn't spectacular, but it wasn't poor enough to exclude either. 
Until a proper release, this is the first digital release of these recordings.  Again for space, the unnumbered String
Quartet in D major is on this CD, along with arrangements of four choral canons for string quartet that haven't been
recorded by a choir (the numberings reflect those found in the Complete Works).

CDs 24-25 are the other
chamber works written for different chamber ensembles.  The larger works are the Serenade, Wind Quintet, and Suite op.
29, while five harder-to-find fragments fill out the second CD.  Putting these all on to one CD shouldn't be so
difficult, but nevertheless no one has come close to doing it before.  CD 26 has the melodramas, which basically means a
piece for voice and chamber ensemble.  The corresponding Complete Works book is sequenced exactly like this, which is
why Herzegew?chse comes before Pierrot Lunaire.  Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain gets the nod for all three, as he
is the only one I know of to approximate the written pitches for Pierrot, which might indeed be what Schoenberg wanted. 
There's no saving Ode To Napoleon, so whatever.  The final CD consists of only string fragments that are again found in
the Complete Works series B.  These are mostly false starts for pieces that never came close to completion, which
includes Toter Winkel.

The final four CDs (28-31) consist solely of various
transcriptions (often for their society).  All of them probably weren't all done by
Schoenberg (like the Berceuse ?l?giaque and Mahler's Das Lied, completed by Riehn), but are still popularly attributed
to him nonetheless.  With no decent order, composers are generally kept together.  Of most interest will be the Brahms
Piano Quartet which leads off CD 28, while the three Bach pieces and two baroque concertos are also of note.  Schubert's
Rosamunde is an arrangement for two pianos rather than orchestra or chamber ensemble.

Like the previous set,
these files are all tagged by the cue files only.  Just drag the file into foobar, right click and select properties,
and the information will be displayed.  It should also show up on the sidebar now.  As again most of these CDs don't
actually exist, log files can't exactly be created, so Audiochecker will have to suffice. (As usual, it had problems
with piano works, although I had to switch Gurre-Lieder versions since the Rattle does appear to be sourced from MPEG
even on CD.  CD 30 may also have that smae problem, but there was nothing I could do about it)
