Description

Books : General : English
Book list:
1. Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon - 1971 - The Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon by Bowker and Hughes (NASA SP-206) is considered the definitive reference manual to the global photographic coverage of the Moon. The images contained within the atlas are excellent for studying lunar morphology because they were obtained at low to moderate Sun angles.

2. The Geology of the Terrestrial Planets - 1984 - The knowledge gained through space exploration is leading to the new science of comparative planetology. Although each planet is unique, all have much in common. While each can be studied independently, a greater understanding is achieved by examining the entire set. This book outlines the geologic history of the terrestrial planets in light of recent exploration and the revolution in geologic thinking.

3. Advances in Global and Local Helioseismology: an Introductory Review - 2011 - Helioseismology studies the structure and dynamics of the Sun's interior by observing oscillations on the surface. The basic principles, recent advances and perspectives of global and local helioseismology are reviewed in this text.

4. The Solar Magnetic Field - 2010 - The magnetic field of the Sun is the underlying cause of the many diverse phenomena combined under the heading of solar activity. Here we describe the magnetic field as it threads its way from the bottom of the convection zone, where it is built up by the solar dynamo, to the solar surface, where it manifests itself in the form of sunspots and faculae, and beyond into the outer solar atmosphere and, finally, into the heliosphere.

5. Understanding Galaxy Formation and Evolution - 2006 - The old dream of integrating into one the study of micro and macrocosmos is now a reality. Cosmology, astrophysics, and particle physics intersect in a scenario (but still not a theory) of cosmic structure formation and evolution called Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model.

6. Massive Stars and their Supernovae - 2010 - The authors focus on the astrophysical aspects, i.e. a description of the evolution of massive stars and their endpoints, with a special emphasis on the composition of their ejecta (in form of stellar winds during the evolution or of explosive ejecta).

7. The First Stars - 2012 - The author discusses our current understanding of the physical processes involved in the formation of Population III stars. He shows how we can identify the mass scale of the first dark matter halos to host Population III star formation, and discusses how gas undergoes gravitational collapse within these halos, eventually reaching protostellar densities.

8. Stellar Atmospheres - 2006 - A course on stellar atmospheres which covers: definitions of and relations between quantities used in radiation theory, blackbody radiation, the exponential integral function, flux, specific intensity and other astrophysical terms, absorption, scattering, extinction and the equation of transfer, limb darkening, atomic spectroscopy, Boltzmann's and Saha's equations, oscillator strengths and related topics, line profiles, curve of growth.

9. Mag 7 Star Atlas Project - 2007 - Star Atlas plotting stars down to Magnitude 7.25, including double-stars (marked with a horizontal bar) and 550 DSOs. This is a full color version including different colors and symbols for DSOs, and a representation of the Milky Way. There are 20 primary charts, and one supplemental chart (11a for the Virgo - Coma Berenices region, plotted to Magnitude 8.5).
