fortunes of Twigg and Dersingham, Purveyors of Fine Veneers, of Angel Pavement London EC1 were foundering, until the
mysterious James Golspie walked through their door. Bearing a swatch of high quality samples from the Baltic at rock
bottom prices, he has given the firm his sole agency on a commission only basis. Overnight the firm's fortunes are
transformed. Orders pour in from every quarter, wages are raised and, in this heady atmosphere, love blossoms. Let us
hope Mr Golspie and his veneers are the genuine article, for it's 1930 and it's very cold out there.

"The steady but unexciting business life of Messrs Twigg and Dersingham, London-based agents for the supply
of inlays and veneers to the furniture trade, is turned upside down when the firm is virtually taken over by a complete
stranger, the buccaneering and distinctly dubious James Golspie. The novel focuses on the devastating effect his arrival
and that of his beautiful but easily bored daughter Lena have on the head of the firm, the rather ineffectual Howard
Dersingham, and three of his employees, Mr Smeeth, the cashier, Miss Matfield, the typist and Turgis, the distinctly
unprepossessing young clerk. One of Priestley’s finest novels, a major work of great emotional depth, full of
marvellous detail (including a vivid portrait of London itself) and splendid set-pieces (Smeeth’s visit to a
symphony concert, the Dersingham’s disastrous dinner party to welcome Golspie, and so on.) And although the
sexual element is toned down its darker side is well in evidence.

The novel has been twice adapted by BBC
Television, in 1957 and 1967, and there is also a fascinating (and surprising) Russian television version dating from
1969."

Published in 1930 in the wake of the
phenomenally successful The Good Companions, Angel Pavement follows the lives of a group of clerical workers employed by
the firm of Twigg and Dersingham.  Their routine lives are transformed, following the arrival of James Golspie (Henry
Goodman), who comes from an unnamed Baltic country, and subsequently reduces them to turmoil both personally and
professionally. 
 
Chris Wallis' production transformed the tale into a panorama of London life in the years
immediately following the Great Depression, in which routine provided a means by which the people could make sense of
their lives.  Once that routine had disappeared, they were left rudderless.  Poppy Sellers (Millie Binks) turns out to
be a disruptive force - even though she cannot be blamed for this - as she becomes the object of unwelcome affections. 
Harold Turhis (Joseph Kloska) becomes obsessed with Golspie's daughter Lena (Faye Castelow), to such an extent that he
tries to manufacture any opportunity to see her.  He becomes so jealous of her that he turns up unannounced at her home
and fights her.  The Golspies are invited to a dinner party at Mr. Dersingham's (Carl Prekopp's) house, but the evening
ends up in a slanging match.  The story ends with the Golspies sailing off to South America, having swindled the firm
out of most of its money.
 
While this production offered a vivid portrait of life in mid-twentieth century
London, it nonetheless took every opportunity to satirize its characters.  The two episodes were chock-full of incidents
too numerous to describe here: what was perhaps most evident was the total inability of most of the characters (the
Golspies excepted) to deal with such incidents.  They resembled clockwork toys, happy with their repetitive lives but
unable to break free of them.  The story was narrated by "Out Guide" (Marcus Brigstocke), who, although
obviously fond of the characters, nonetheless took every opportunity to ridicule them. 
 
Angel Pavement was a
particularly surprising piece; I never expected it to be so funny.  All credit to the large and hard-working cast, as
well as to Wallis.
