Bach/Mendelssohn: Matthäus-Passion (version 1841) - Spering
This version of the St. Matthew Passion was restored by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and performed in 1841 in Bach's old Thomaskirche in Leipzig.
Mendelssohn cut a lot of arias and chorals, keeping the focus on the Evangelist. He, in turn, is accompagnied by two celli and double bass, adding sonority to the recitatives. A lot of places in the recits has been transposed and a few places reharmonized. Clarinets has replaced the oboes of the original.
This performance is "period", but Romantic instead of Baroque, which is evident in the phrasing, instruments and the 430Hz pitch.
