Daddy Mac Blue Band - Pay The Piper - 2012


Pay The Piper is Daddy Mack Blues Band's fifth
CD and features the charismatic Daddy Mack Orr in fine form.
Opening with "Showtime," he confidently
introduces the band, asking the listener to "sing along" 
while a soulful horn section jabs and swells
throughout the track. 

"Best In Town" continues the light mood and includes a searing harmonica
solo by special guest Billy Gibson. 
The band slows it down for track three, "Como," a song referencing
Daddy Mack's childhood home in Mississippi. 
The CD takes on a more serious tone on the title track. 
The band
is super tight and funky while Daddy Mack sings and plays lead guitar like a man who's seen it all. 

On
tracks like "Workin' Man" and "Black & Blue," the theme of struggle continues. 
While
"Woman Do Right" is the quintessential blues song about a misguided woman, "Let's Get Together" is
an unusual, slow blues with Billy Gibson on chromatic harp.

"Sugar Daddy" is co-penned by Mack and
is absolute, unadulterated fun! "Of Blues I Sing," co-written by rhythm guitarist James Bonner, 
features
an inspiring performance by Daddy Mack on vocals and guitar. 
Bonner is heard as lead vocalist for the first time
on CD on "Trickle Down Blues," an entertaining song with a keen economic/political perspective. 
The CD
closes with "If We Never Meet Again," a beautiful soul ballad, simple and honest. 


If you are
a fan of the late Albert King from his prime at Stax in Memphis, you will love the work of Daddy Mack Orr, who is
continuing that great legacy, both as a powerhouse Memphis electric blues guitarist and as a maturely soulful vocalist.


This is practically an obligatory 50-minute listen every time, as there is nothing here you would want to
skip. 
Each song is unique and impeccably arranged, produced, recorded and performed. 
His Blues Band
complements his lead perfectly and is supplemented here on a number of tracks by a dazzling Billy Gibson on harmonica.

This is an all original program of songs, with the exception of the title song, a hard-hitting one 
about the
harsh reality of life on urban mean streets, originally by Wally Ford & the Lizzard Kings from 1996. 
(Ford
co-wrote nine of the other eleven songs here.) 

"Let's Get Together" is an achingly beautiful blues
ballad, in which Daddy Mack's guitar shimmers, and his deep and plaintive rasp rises to emotive heights.
His
co-write "Black & Blue" cleverly weaves the story of the black bluesman moving from the rural South and
forging a career in the big city. 
In "Como" he waxes nostalgic for the small Mississippi town he can
always go home to and be accepted for himself. 
"Workin' Man" expresses the pride in having a steady job
and home life, being able to "bring home the bacon and put it in the pan."
"Showtime" and
"Of Blues I Sing," a groover and a slow sizzler, respectively, are two parts of his mission statement as a
career bluesman. 
Another Daddy Mack co-write, the infectious "Sugar Daddy," describes a very different
side of his life
