It is important to note that the main idea of the literary source — the idea of how hard it is for a creative person to live in the world of totalitarian mentality, in the world of unbearable pressure of the authorities — this idea has been picked up by the director and transferred to an absolutely new situation. However, in the film this idea sounds very convincing and makes an even more terrifying impression, than while being presented in the novel (the reader may be distracted by some outside circumstances as well as questions and puzzles offered by the writer). You will not find any puzzles in Sokurov's film. The filmmaker has depicted a strange and pretty frightening world, where a man has to live, work and create despite everything, and that is not easy at all”.
