Description

Audio Books : Mystery and Suspense : Other quality : English
All are unabridged and are of CD sound quality.
Narrators include Lewis Hancock and Sara Coward.

The novels in the Frederick Troy series share the eponymous protagonist Frederick (he doesn't like any form of his given name, preferring to be addressed by his surname) Troy, the younger son of a Russian immigrant father who's become a wealthy newspaper publisher and baronet. Defying class and family expectations, the independently wealthy Troy joins Scotland Yard, becoming an investigator on the "murder squad". The novels range from war torn London of the 1940s through to the 'swinging' London of the 1960s.
The second audio book (Old Flames) and fourth audio book (Riptide, aka Bluffing Mr Churchill) in this series do not appear to be available so far.

* Black Out [Book 1 - 1995] ED, 12 hours 41 mins, 48kbps. Thanks to Pinky and CaptainSky
The Blitz, London 1944 - as the Luftwaffe make their last desperate assault on the city, Londoners take to the shelters once again and eagerly await the signal for D-Day. In the East End children lead police to a charred, dismembered corpse buried in a bombsite. The victim is German and it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary murder. For Russian emigre Detective-Sergeant Troy it is the start of a manhunt which will lead him into a world of stateless refugees, military intelligence and corruption in high places. A manhunt in which Troy is both the hunter and the hunted.

* A Little White Death [Book 3 - 1998] CD, 17 hours 22 mins, 32 kbps.
London in the swinging '60s provides the setting for this latest in Lawton's series featuring Scotland Yard lawman Frederick Troy. Troy finds himself a reluctant attendee at several country weekends where a flashy acquaintance, Dr. Patrick Fitzpatrick, holds sybaritic court. The aristocratic Troy has been, equally reluctantly, attempting to acclimate himself to the wide-open atmosphere of the new England, a country in the grip of a seismic social and sexual upheaval. Fitz and several government cronies have been shagging a pair of beautiful twins, the Ffitch sisters, and the equally lovely but underage Clover Browne. When Fitz is arrested for "immoral earnings and procurement," Troy escapes the media spotlight, confined to a sanatorium with a nasty case of tuberculosis. Troy rallies to investigate after several participants in the Fitz scandal are found dead. The whodunit phase takes several hundred pages to ignite, but Lawton is such an entertaining, literate storyteller it doesn't really matter. Once the now frail Troy steps in, neither threats, beatings, near-drowning nor shooting can frighten him off the case.

* Blue Rondo US title: Flesh Wounds [Book 5 - 2005] CD, 12 hours 6 mins, 32 kbps
The backdrop is London in the late 1950s. The East End is ripe for redevelopment; the property sharks are buying up the bombsites and Victorian terraces; corruption is rife; the Kray brothers are running amok; Macmillan is PM of a shaky Tory government; Gaitskell expects to succeed as the first Labour PM for almost a decade to the delight of Troy's brothers, one an MP, the other a Fleet Street editor. Troy's last big case had been to protect the Russian leaders, Bulganin and Khrushchev on their first visit to Britain in 1956. Now a series of increasingly sadistic murders occurs on his old East End patch; a wartime girlfriend, who became a GI bride - since married to a Republican Presidential candidate - reappears into his life. Nor is she the only woman to occupy his bed in the tiny terraced flat in Goodwin's Court, off St Martin's Lane. When the retiring US President Eisenhower makes a farewll visit to London, all Troy's worlds combine in a frightening creshendo of corruption and violence. (The title, Blue Rondo, is taken from a Dave Brubeck record).

* Second Violin [Book 6 - 2007] CD, 15 hours 12 mins, 32 kbps. Thanks to Telpointer.
Lawton's sixth installment of Frederick Troy's adventures not only goes back in time from previous entries (A Little White Death, 2006, etc.) but also expands its scope from Frederick alone to the equally active lives of his father and brother.In Vienna in the late 1930s, as the violence of the Nazi Party is growing more virulent, the story is covered by Rod Troy, a reporter for The Sunday Post, a newspaper owned by his eminent father, Alexei. Decades ago, Alex also spent years in Vienna, some of them, Rod learns, as a psychiatric patient of the energetic Sigmund Freud. In London, Alex has encounters of his own with Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan et al., concerning the threat of Hitler and the looming war. Alex, himself a Russian emigre, writes a bristling editorial about Russia for the Post as his son Frederick, Rod's brother, continues his ascent to Scotland Yard's Murder Squad. On the eve of Kristallnacht, Rod contemplates ensuring the safety of his family by fleeing Vienna. In London, Alex continues to have Churchill's ear as the government prepares to incarcerate recent immigrants deemed suspicious - a program to be carried out by Frederick and his colleagues. In the midst of this turmoil, as the bombing of London begins, Frederick probes the hit-and-run death of a rabbi that seems an ordinary crime until another rabbi is killed in his own synagogue.History and politics again add depth and texture to Lawton's impressively complex thriller. (Kirkus Reviews)

* A Lily of the Field [Book 7 - 2010] , CD, 13 hours 45 mins, 48 kbps. Thanks to Oldscotsman.
Meret Voytek, pupil of professor Viktor Rosen, a Jew in exile from Germany, watches as Vienna comes under Nazi rule and the repercussions for the Jews. Across Europe, Dr Karel Szabo, a Hungarian physicist, has been interned on the Isle of Man. Rescued by the Americans, they recruit him in building an atomic bomb. Moving from Vienna and Auschwitz to the deserts of New Mexico to London, fate carries the enemy alien, Szabo and gentile Voytek, across the battlefields of the destructive war....
