Trama:
Bologna, 1954. Taddeo, un ragazzo di 18 anni, sogna di diventare un frequentatore del mitico Bar Margherita che si trova proprio sotto i portici davanti a casa sua. Con uno stratagemma, il giovane diventa l'autista personale di Al, l'uomo più carismatico e più misterioso del quartiere. Attraverso la sua protezione, Taddeo riuscirà ad essere testimone delle avventure di Bep, innamorato della entreneuse Marcella; delle peripezie di Gian, aspirante cantante e vittima di uno scherzo atroce; delle follie di Manuelo, ladruncolo e sessuofobo; delle cattiverie di Zanchi, l'inventore delle cravatte con l'elastico; delle stranezze di Sarti, vestito giorno e notte nel suo smoking e campione di ballo. Per non parlare del contesto dove Taddeo vive con mamma, circuita dal medico di famiglia e il nonno che perde invece la testa per una prosperosa maestra di pianoforte.
