Description

After quitting Ceremonial Oath, Oscar Dronjak and Jesper Strömblad formed HammerFall with the help of Niklas Sundin and Mikael Stanne, who are both members of Dark Tranquillity.

As they were all involved in other bands, HammerFall was relegated to be a side project for several years. Their concerts were limited mostly to a local music contest named Rockslaget.

In 1996, HammerFall reached the semi-finals of Rockslaget. However, it was soon found that vocalist Mikael Stanne was not going to be able to perform with the band on the semi-finals. Through mutual friends, they got in contact with Joacim Cans, who agreed to play with them for the night. The concert was a success, despite the fact that the judges didn't qualify HammerFall for the finals. By the end of that day, Joacim had already been made an official member of the band.

In early 1997, German label Nuclear Blast approached HammerFall with a contract for a European release deal, which included four albums. The deal was accepted and the band proceeded to record their first two music videos — "HammerFall" and "Glory to the Brave". Towards the end of 1997, Glory to the Brave was released in Japan and the United States. Sales of the album reached one hundred thousand copies. HammerFall was also nominated for the Swedish Grammy award in the Best Hard Rock act category.

Their first world tour took place in October 1998, after the release of "Legacy of Kings". During the shows in Sweden, Joacim Cans caught a serious throat infection which made it impossible for him to sing. Shortly afterwards, Magnus Rosén was afflicted with the same disease, and after him the whole of HammerFall's support crew became sick. The members of the band played for as long as possible and then were forced to postpone or cancel a few dates. By the end of that tour, drummer Patrik Räfling left the band, and Anders Johansson joined the band.

After the release of "Renegade", critics were mostly positive, even though there was a consensus that the band's sound was remarkably different. A music video was created for the song "Renegade" and reached the top of the Swedish parade; the same soon happened with the album itself, which reached gold status with over forty thousand copies sold.

After releasing "Crimson Thunder", HammerFall's tour was brought to a sudden end when Oscar Dronjak suffered a motorcycle accident, breaking his left arm and sustaining several minor injuries. They were then left with no choice but to take a break.

Their 6th album, titled "Threshold", was released on October 20, 2006 and it went directly to a number 1 position on the Swedish charts.

On March 6, 2007, a statement was posted online at HammerFall's official website (and his own official website), that bassist Magnus Rosén would not be involved with the band anymore. The reason for his departure stated that he was unhappy in the band and wants to focus on other projects.

Magnus Rosén has released a few solo albums that are comprised mostly of bass playing.

Putting a misleading label on something is a risky venture, even if the product in question turns out to be a good one. On the other hand, such an approach might prove to heighten the enjoyment that ensues once the true nature of the commodity is revealed. Such was the experience of hearing about the oddly titled 9th opus of Hammerfall (r)Evolution, a title that would lead most to believe that the band was off to join the ranks of In Flames and Daniel Heiman in opting for a modern, watered down pseudo-metal sound to broaden what is already a fairly massive following. Thankfully, the title of this album works more along the lines of the side of evolution that few tend to associate with the term when applied to music, namely the stronger species winning out and continuing its line in perpetuity.

This isn't to say that Hammerfall has created a complete carbon copy of one of their earlier albums, though at times this could be easily compared to their seminal offerings, namely their slicker and professionally produced 3rd offering Renegade. Things start off on a highly auspicious note with a haunting, almost Viking-metal sounding intro that sounds eerily similar to something heard on Bathory's Twilight Of The Gods, before launching into a full blown Manowar meets Helloween fest in "Hector's Hymn". Moving along things take on an even more multifaceted flavor as the title song takes over, trading ballad-oriented verses for a pummeling metallic groove right out of early 80s Accept, complete with a massive gang chorus, immediately followed by another riveting affair with plenty of catchy melodies and guitar noodling in "Bushido".

One thing that becomes apparent almost immediately is the new found energy that Hammerfall has found in relation to their previous album Infected, which wasn't a massive stylistic departure, but presented the band with a more stripped down and subdued character. Everything from the tempo to Joacim Cans' soaring vocals have been given a veritable adrenaline shot, so much so that on a few faster songs like "We Won't Back Down" and "Origins" Cans becomes reminiscent of Rob Halford and Harry Conklin at times, in contrast to his earlier studio efforts where his higher range was somewhat nasally and airy sounding. Similarly, lead guitarist Pontus Norgren has come out of his shell after his previous 2 albums with the band being marked by a restrained performance, and particularly in the case of the lead breaks on "Origins", he manages to equal his predecessor Stefan Elmgren at tearing up the fret board while still keeping things melodic and memorable.

If there is one downside to this album, it is that the usual moral of "not judging a book by its cover" doesn't really apply here since the actual album art is actually quite indicative of its character, whereas the album's title is where any prejudice could have potentially formed. But whatever name or label is put on this thing, it's a fun and fast rediscovery of an earlier Hammerfall, one that the author of this review discovered back in his early days as a metal head in the late 90s. It walks that same brilliant line between the early heavy metal pioneers in Dio and Judas Priest while also incorporating the more melodically triumphant and upbeat character of Helloween and Manowar. Raise the hammer once more to the sky, and may it crush all whom oppose!
