Titan:



When an exploratory spaceship captained by Cirocco "Rocky" Jones discovers 

what appears to be a 

massive new moon orbiting Saturn, the crew investigates -- only to be 

captured by the strange satellite 

(which turns out to be a gigantic sentient being) and drawn into its 

unfathomable depths. The seven crew members are separated, 

held in a state of suspended animation for an undetermined period of 

time, and eventually reborn into a fantastical 

subterranean world totally naked, hairless -- and deeply altered. 

In a realm populated by a wonderland of mythical creatures, Rocky and 

her surviving crewmates must somehow stay alive 

long enough to find a way to communicate with the god that calls itself 

Gaea…



Wizard is the second book in the Gaean Trilogy.



Gaea is world and goddess, a dazzling pageant of wild mythology and 

chimerical creatures in a gargantuan, strange and beautiful world. Cirocco 

is now the Wizard of Gaea, powerful but troubled. And ready to lead 

the revolt against Gaea's mad, capricious tyranny.



Wizard goes dramatically further than humor or humanism. It's also very 

serious science fiction about a genetic manipulator with the power of 

a god and her sentient creations' struggle for self-determination. It's 

clever, complex and confusing, but never confused. And it's the highest 

point of this roller-coaster series.

Science fiction fans who first read Titan in 1979 will be pleasantly 

surprised by how well Varley's masterpiece of imagination -- a blend 

of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey and L. Frank Baum's The 

Wizard of Oz -- has withstood the test of time; and younger genre fans 

who know Varley only from more recent works (Steel Beach, Red Thunder, 

Mammoth, et al.) will be blown away be this aptly titled cult classic.-

Gaea, the world and goddess, has gone insane; she kidnaps the son of 

the witch Robin. Cirocco Jones and the Titanides set out in search of 

him into a headlong confrontation with the monstrous power of Gaea.



Demon is ... a novel that's packed full of individual moments and scenes 

that stack up to the best writing Varley's done. He seems incapable 

of creating a character without a complex motivation or an interaction 

without a complex sociological background, but he explains everything 

simply and smoothly, with a minimum of wasteful padding. These are Great 

Big Books in the best sense–grand, almost space-operatic yarns from 

the days before it was necessary to write a thousand-page epic to tell 

an epic-sized story.
