Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts) ist ein Dienstmädchen bei Dr. Jekyll (John Malkovich). Zuerst betrachtet sie ihn voller Ehrfurcht, langsam entwickelt sich eine Freundschaft zwischen dem Doktor und Mary. Eines Tages taucht der neue Assistent des Doktors, Edward Hyde, auf. Mary ist von ihm fasziniert. Erst als sichtbar wird, dass Hyde ein Geheimnis kennt, welches Mary dem Doktor anvertraute, wird seine wahre Identität offenbar. Schließlich stirbt der Doktor und mit ihm sein bösartiges Alter Ego.
