Malaysian
student Ronny Chieng arrives at Melbourne University to read law, with his mum's pleas to study hard still ringing
in his ears. He soon learns it is not as simple as that when a deranged law professor, a drunken social secretary and a
bunch of rich, uptight, racist fellow students make for an interesting first day.

When Ronnie and his new
friends Asher, Elvin, Wei Jun and Denedict find that there's only one copy of the textbook for their first
assignment, it's a race to get hold of it, and Ronnie somehow, very reluctantly, finds himself entering an Aussie
drinking competition to win the book back.

When
American student Craig enrols and is placed in International House, he just wants to party, but Ronny and his friends
need to study. Nothing Ronny says can persuade Craig to stop, and before they know it the partying has caused a total
breakdown in house relations. As Craig's partying reaches legendary levels, custard tarts may be the only thing
that can save them all.

When Professor Dale sees the awesome skills of Ronny, Wei-Jun and Elvin with
a shuttlecock, he reasons they could do exactly the same with a ball and makes them the new front line of the college
Aussie rules football team. With a serious grudge match on the horizon, the pressure is on for them to help the college
avoid yet another humiliating defeat.

Ronny happily agrees to fill in for Asher in her job at the
whole foods store but finds he doesn't really get on with hippy hygeine standards. Meanwhile, Craig opens himself
up to new cultural experiences with a trip to the campus bubble tea shop.

With an assignment due,
Asher gets a virus on her ancient computer and it's Ronny's fault. He is sure he can fix, it but to do that he
might have to actually ask someone else for help.

It is time for the annual law faculty comedy show
and, against his better judgement, Ronny agrees to join in because Asher is doing it. But he soon learns he doesn't
much like acting in comedy shows, or rehearsing them, or any of the people who do them.

With their
final exam coming up and a warning from Professor Dale that 'God himself would fail this exam' still ringing
in their ears, Wei Jun lends Ronny her amazing course notes on condition that he doesn't show them to anyone else.
Of course, Ronny loses them and they get shared with everyone. So begins a cautionary tale about trust, late nights,
cold and flu tablets, dodgy drug deals and Elvin's peculiar talent for chemistry.
