A true door stop of a book, but it's length doesn't detract from the story, which is based (very)
loosely on the story of 'Samurai' William Adams, an English merchant in Japan in the late 16th century.
Clavell
drew deeply on his POW days and his experiences with the strangeness of Bushido to write this and King Rat. The insights
into the pressure cooker world of medieval Japan were worth the read, (if true), but the main character of Pilot Major
Blackthorne was quite frankly annoying. I mean, how many sailors of that period would act in quite such a fan quivering,
virginal manner, and the religious hatreds seemed to be a bit overboard.
When I originally torrented this I got
some niggles about the narrator, David Case. Listening to it again the other day, I have to say that I think he  did a
pretty fair job and the Japanese characters were quite believable, although some of the Portuguese characters did sound
a bit like Manuel from Fawlty Towers. Que?
I do like that he didn't make a big effort to do stereotypical Japanese
accents, like the dubbing on Shinatro The Samurai back in the '60s, which made Medieval Japanese sound like a
Tokyo baseball team grunting threats at each other.
Suffice to say, I can't forgive David Case for what he did to
Flashman, but then, who could follow Timothy West.
